A business missing from ChatGPT needs a recorded test before a repair. Check the question, search access, business facts, and sources behind the answer.

Why Your Business Is Missing from a ChatGPT Answer: What to Check

If your business is missing from a ChatGPT answer, first establish what the answer actually tested. A general response, a searched local recommendation and a request to open your website are different observations. One omission is one answer, so test more before you fix anything.

I'd save the original answer before changing anything. Then check the prompt, search mode, business facts and the sources used. That gives you a specific problem to investigate instead of a reason to buy an undefined “AI visibility fix.”

Reproduce the question with the location stated

Record the exact prompt, date, product and account settings relevant to the test. Note whether ChatGPT searched the web; use its Search option when you're testing current web discovery. Save the full answer and links, including responses where your business is missing.

OpenAI's ChatGPT search guide says prompts can be rewritten into targeted queries and sent to search partners. General IP location and, when enabled, memory can affect that process; precise device location is optional. State the city or postcode instead of relying on “near me.” A VPN or a different account can change the comparison context.

Run a brand-name question separately from a service question. “What services does [business name] offer in [city]?” tests recognition and information about that business. “Who repairs [equipment] in [postcode]?” tests a broader discovery situation. Replace the brackets with real details. For a B2B company, specify the buyer, specialty and relevant market. A local-contractor query may describe a different customer decision.

Repeat the defined checks in fresh conversations and retain the outcomes. Repetition gives you a record of what appeared under those conditions.

Check whether the business information is correct

Ask about your business by name and inspect the answer's links. If it gives another company's phone number or an old service area, trace those details to the source where possible. Check your own site, Business Profile and listings you control for that specific error.

Use the real public business name, current contact details and accurate coverage. Different punctuation or an abbreviated street name isn't automatically a defect. A wrong phone number, obsolete domain or confusion with a similarly named business is worth correcting. Distinguish your company with factual location and service details. Keep the real business name.

If a third-party page is wrong, request a correction through its normal process. Keep a dated copy of the original and confirm the change on the public page. A fixed source is one less wrong fact for ChatGPT to repeat.

Check search access without confusing it with training

OpenAI's crawler guide assigns OAI-SearchBot to ChatGPT search. It recommends allowing that bot in robots.txt and allowing requests from its published IP ranges. GPTBot concerns potential training use, while ChatGPT-User handles certain visits requested by a user. These controls have distinct purposes.

Ask the site administrator to inspect the actual page response, robots rules, indexing directives and CDN or firewall behavior. Your browser loading the page doesn't mean OpenAI's crawler can, so check the crawler's access directly. Keep login-only and private material private. Limit any access repair to the public pages intended for discovery.

The publisher FAQ says public sites can appear in ChatGPT search and explains that opting out of search crawling can still leave navigational links found through other sources. A link containing your business name is different from your page being used for a searched answer.

If you find a blocker, make a targeted repair and verify the public result. If access is already correct, continue with the content and source checks.

Inspect the sources behind the answer

Open every relevant citation and check what it supports. Does the linked page actually name the recommended company and cover the requested service area? Is it a directory, a company's own page or a dated article? Record an unsupported assertion even when your own business benefits from it.

If competitors appear, compare the source's inclusion criteria and factual entries. A directory may list only members or advertisers. Its omission of you is an observation about that directory; don't turn it into proof that ChatGPT requires a certain number of mentions or reviews. Seek legitimate corrections or eligible listings, with commercial relationships disclosed where relevant.

Also inspect ordinary search discoverability in the search tools you use. A missing or confusing service page there is a useful troubleshooting lead.

Make the customer question answerable on your site

Write down what a buyer needs to decide: accepted services, real coverage, qualifications, availability, quote process and contact details. Find the public page that answers each question. Correct a missing or ambiguous answer without expanding your claimed capabilities.

For example, a hypothetical appliance service page could distinguish washing-machine repair from gas-appliance work, name the postcodes served and explain how to request a diagnostic visit. A customer can use those details. Adding a town list without checking actual coverage gives them an unreliable answer.

Keep important details in readable text and ensure the phone link and form work on mobile. Structured data should match those details. Google says its AI features don't require special AI markup, and that guidance covers Google only.

Choose a repair and test again

If the evidence shows a wrong phone number, correct it. If the search bot is blocked on a public page, have the administrator repair the access rule. If the page doesn't explain the service, improve that answer. When you haven't identified a defect, keep measuring before ordering a rebuild.

Record the change and repeat your saved questions under comparable conditions. Track mentions, citations, referral visits and actual inquiries separately. If you show up later, that's a good sign. Check your inquiries to see whether it brings work.
