TL;DR: Google Business Profile supplies important facts for Maps and local results. Audit verification, category, hours, services, photos, and reviews for accuracy. These fixes help customers size up the business.
To see what a Google Business Profile gap could cost you, start with the customer action it disrupts: a wrong phone number, closed hours shown as open, or a service missing from the profile. A lower map position by itself cannot be priced from one search.
A well-built website can sit alongside weak map visibility, and an incomplete profile is one candidate explanation. Organic and local results run on overlapping but different systems. Look at the query, the location, the profile, distance, prominence, and the competitors before you settle on a cause.
What Google Business Profile actually controls
Google Business Profile supplies information used in several visible local surfaces:
The local pack is a map block that can appear for location-based searches. Its format and click distribution vary by query and device.
Google Maps results can show the profile when customers search directly. Position varies with relevance, distance, prominence, and the searcher's context.
The Knowledge Panel can appear for a direct brand search, showing hours, address, photos, and reviews. Wrong details there mislead a customer who may never reach your site at all. Profile performance reports show views and tracked actions, but they cannot tell you every customer’s next step. Ask callers what they checked before contacting you.
Profile data feeds all three surfaces, and your website and other sources feed relevance and prominence alongside it. What you paid to build the site predicts neither one.
Five problems to check
Wrong primary category. Choose the most specific accurate option and review Google's category guidance. A wrong category is a plain factual error, which is reason enough to fix it. Watch your visibility afterward instead of predicting it beforehand.
No photos or outdated photos. Current photos let a customer confirm the location, the team, and the standard of the work. A profile whose newest photo shows a van you sold is answering a question you would rather it left alone.
No business description. Use it to say what the business does, where it works, and who it serves. Keep it factual, and read any change in clicks off your own numbers.
Check category, photos, and description in one sitting, because a neglected profile usually carries more than one gap.
Unverified or abandoned profile. Verification options vary: video, phone, email, live video, or mail, and the account tells you which one you get. You cannot manage or fully represent a profile without it, which makes this the one item on the list with no workaround.
No responses to reviews. A reply shows a prospective customer how you handle a problem in public, which is what they are reading the one-star reviews to find out. See how to respond to Google reviews as a contractor.
"Profile accuracy is controllable. Local position is not. Fix factual gaps, then measure the result."
Reviews can affect customers and local results
Google's local ranking guidance says review count and positive ratings can help local ranking alongside relevance, distance, and prominence. Customers may read content and dates too. No single review metric decides a position.
More reviews and newer reviews will not settle a ranking between two profiles. Compare the whole result set, and keep a compliant process running for requesting honest feedback.
Ask customers for honest reviews with no incentives and no gating, and respect contact consent. For Detroit B2B service businesses, ask a few buyers directly what they checked before signing, and let their answers rank review volume against everything else they mention.
Review profile accuracy before expected seasonal demand
Accurate profile details are useful before seasonal demand peaks because customers may rely on current hours, services, and contact information.
Tampa home-service businesses should check special hours, service categories, and contact details before hurricane season starts, because that is the week nobody has time to edit a profile. Accurate details cut customer friction.
Nashville turnover cleaners and maintenance companies should keep service areas, hours, and contact details current, because a property manager checks them the week a unit turns over. Verification and reviews help a customer evaluate you.
What to do this week
Prioritize these checks from verified inaccuracy, customer impact, and available data:
- Verify your profile if it is not already verified. Go to business.google.com and check status.
- Set your primary category to the most specific option that matches your core service. Review Google's category list and avoid broad terms like "contractor" or "home services" when a specific category exists.
- Add accurate, useful photos. Let the gaps in what a customer needs to see decide how many, and ignore any fixed quota.
- Write a concise, factual business description within Google's current limits. Include relevant service and coverage information without a word-count target.
- Set accurate hours, including special hours for any upcoming holidays or seasonal changes.
- Create a compliant, consent-aware review-request process for eligible customers. Choose the cohort and cadence from policy, relationship, and operational fit.
Record the size of the problem you found
For each error, write down the affected field, the live value, the correct value, the date corrected, and the customer action it could block. Test the phone and website links yourself. In the Profile performance view, compare call-button clicks and website clicks for the same period before and after the correction. Google’s Calls metric counts clicks on the call button; check actual calls, valid inquiries, and booked jobs in your own intake log. Seasonality, distance, competing listings, and small counts can move those numbers too.
None of these edits costs media money, and all of them cost time. If a profile displays the wrong contact information, I would correct that before buying more traffic to it. You can submit accurate fields, though Google's displayed data may also come from other sources and changes may need review. The audit finds the error. Your job records tell you what it cost.
